Manual handling injuries can have serious implications for the employer and the company. They can occur almost anywhere in the workplace and heavy manual labour, awkward postures, repetitive movements of arms, legs and back or previous/existing injury can increase the risk. What is manual handling?
Manual handling covers a wide range of activities including lifting, pushing, pulling, holding, throwing and carrying. If these task are doing repeatedly or for a long time, they can cause fatigue and injury. These tasks often use in the industry of logistic, farming, cleaning, assembling, cleaning, sorting, storing and manufacturing. Due to repetitive handling and improper posture cause work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) as know as manual handling injuries, material handling injuries or workplace handling injuries. The symptom cause pain to arms, legs, joints, and repetitive strain injuries of various sorts.
The main risk factors, or conditions, associated with the development of injuries in manual material handling tasks include:
• Repetitive motions
• Forceful exertions
• Awkward postures
• Lack of rest
Besides, poor environmental conditions, such as extreme heat, cold, noise, and poor lighting, may increase workers’ chances of developing other types of problems.
Good posture and lifting techniques can help reduce the risks, but research indicates that making changes to workplace design and getting the right tools are the most effective way to prevent manual handling injury.

According to latest work-related musculoskeletal disorder statistics (WRMSDs) in Great Britain, 2019, the total number of WRMSDs cases in 2018/19 was 498,000 out of a total of 1,354,000 for all work-related illnesses, occupied 37% of the total cases over a third of all workplace injuries.
